The Enneagram

What is the Enneagram?

A map of nine personality types, each built around a core motivation: what a person most wants, most fears and habitually pays attention to. It describes patterns, not worth. No type is better than another, and every type reflects something of the God who made us.

Is it Christian? Can a Christian use it?

The Enneagram isn't ancient, Christian or Scripture. We use it as a mirror for honest self-examination, never as your identity, which is in Christ, and we test it against Scripture. Is the Enneagram Christian? covers its history, the strongest Christian objections and how we answer them.

Is it scientific?

Partly. The largest review of the research (Hook and colleagues, 2021) found mixed evidence for reliability and validity, with less support for wings and lines than for the core types. We present it honestly, measure our own test against careful interviews, and will publish what we find. More on By the numbers.

Can my type change?

Most teachers say your core type stays the same through life, while how healthy and free you are within it changes a great deal: that's what the levels of health describe. Stress, grief or a hard season can also make anyone look like another type for a while.

What are wings, instincts and subtypes?

Wings are the two types next to yours on the circle, which can flavor your type. Instincts (self-preservation, social, one-to-one) are where your energy goes first; your strongest instinct plus your type gives one of 27 subtypes.

The Enneavine test

How does the test work?

You see three statements at a time and make two quick taps: the one most like you, then whichever of the other two is more like you. The statements describe motivations, not behaviors. The test adapts as you go, asking the questions that best tell apart the types you're between, and stops when it's confident. Then it finds your wing, your instinct stack and your subtype, and ends by letting you check its result against short descriptions.

How long does it take?

Usually 45 to 50 sets of statements, about 12 to 15 minutes. If you already know your type, a short version gives just your wing, instincts and subtype in about 5 minutes.

Why choose between statements instead of agreeing or disagreeing?

Because it's harder to game and fairer. Rating each statement on its own lets everyone agree with the flattering ones; choosing between three asks which is truest of you, even when all three fit you, or none do.

How accurate is it?

We don't know yet, and we won't claim a number until we've measured it. The test is new and improving. Our goal is at least 90% agreement with careful typing interviews, and we'll publish accuracy by type once we've checked. Until then the result shows how confident the test is, and when it's close it says so. Our approach explains how it's built.

Why did my result say I'm between two types?

Because your answers really did point two ways, and we'd rather say so than guess. Read both profiles, especially the “Am I really this type?” questions on each, and talk it over with someone who knows you well. Lookalike types (for example Six and Nine, or Four and Five) are common and understandable.

How does the test find my wing?

After the main questions, a few sets put your two neighboring types side by side. The result shows how likely each wing is from all your answers (for example 5w4 at 25% and 5w6 at 75%). It's an estimate until real results calibrate it, and wings have less research support than types, so read both and see which rings truer.

Is the test free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it's free, and there's no account. You can download your result as a PDF to print or share.

Can I retake it?

Yes, as often as you like. If your result surprised you, answer for how you've been for most of your life, not just lately.

Faith

Why does each type have a fruit of the Spirit?

The fruit of the Spirit is ninefold (Galatians 5:22–23), and so are the types. Pairing each type with the fruit its growth points toward is our interpretation, not something Scripture says. Every believer is called to all nine.

Does Enneavine type Bible characters or Jesus?

We sometimes discuss how people have read Bible characters, always labeled as speculation with more than one reading, because Scripture shows us actions more than motives. We don't type Jesus; we present him as the fullness each type longs for.

What if I find something that doesn't fit Scripture?

Please tell us at contact@enneavine.com. We hold our content with open hands and correct it as we learn.

Privacy and your data

Do you store my answers?

No, not unless you choose to. The test runs in your browser (or on your phone in the app), and your answers stay there. At the end you can choose to share them for research, without your name, email or account. Details in our privacy policy.

What happens if I share for research?

Your answers help calibrate the test and build honest statistics. We only ever publish figures about groups of at least 100 people, and we never sell data. You get a response code; email it to privacy@enneavine.com and we'll delete your response.

Should my workplace use Enneavine for hiring?

No. We don't support using Enneagram results to hire, promote or exclude anyone. Type describes patterns, not ability or worth. See our terms of use.

The app and contact

Is there an app?

Yes, it's on its way for iPhone and Android: the test, a daily two-minute growth path written for your type, your type profile and relationships, all working offline. We'll announce it here when it's in the app stores.
